2.5 years later and you just saved me a ton of money. Lost all control to my discharge and was searching for a reason why. You got me to look at that part and luckily enough my roll pin was in tact but hanging on for dear life. Taped it back in and good as new.
Just an FYI on all the joystick style models, if your chute is stiff to rotate left/right after time, a little shot of wd40 from time to time at the base helps, also sometimes you have to grab the bracket that holds the chute assembly over the ring and give the bracket a solid upwards lift to "re-bend" the bracket and take some pressure off the area where the chute meets the ring.
Thank you for the video!!! I live in Buffalo and of course my chute control broke during our historic blizzard a couple weeks ago. The pin cost me 71 cents and the repair took an hour. Chute control works prefect. I'm VERY grateful you took the time to produce this video.
Outstanding! Thanks for posting! You just saved me a ton of time figuring this out on my own. Heading to HF tomorrow.
This video was a huge help. I'm back up and running with a fully functioning chute. Thanks for sharing.
I had the identical pin fall out (lost in snow somewhere). Since it was not a pivot joint, I decided to use a hair pin cotter pin (heavy duty) instead. So far, it's holding up well. Not sure if anyone else has used a cotter pin and has any feedback. Obviously though, if it is a pivot joint where the roll pin comes out or breaks, I would get a replacement roll pin, as you did in the video. Thanks for sharing the video, as the tip about the gear having to be up in 6 was very valuable too.
Thanks so much for the great and detailed video. Like so many of the other comments, I was manually moving my chute. Well, I got a good break in the weather and decided it was time to get the chute fixed. Found your video after searching prices on a new 4 way chute controller. Way overpriced, and new controller was not needed. I replaced the roll pin that had broken with the 5/32' roll pin you suggested and put the machine back together. Chute is working perfectly! Thanks so much!
Thank you for this video. Saved me a ton of money. I have the exact same snowblower. I found roll pins at the general store for 99 cents each and bought the 5/32'' as you said and it worked perfectly. after watching your video it took me 30 minutes to do the job and a lot of that time was spent looking for my 3/8'' socket and extension bar. In total it cost me $2.00 because I bought a spare to keep in my toolbox and I saved about $140.00 not having to replace the whole 4-way chute control assembly. Great Video!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I have 28" Craftsman that has the same issue. It actually broke near the end of last winter, but I was too lazy to try and fix it then and just manually moved the chute by hand. Well, I had a solid 8 months of good weather to address it, but forgot all about it. Now, it's Dec 1 and we're about to get a 18+ inches of the sloppy white stuff here in southern New England. Running out to the hardware store now in search of a 5/32" x 1" roll pin! LOL!! Thanks again!!
Thank you. I went all winter manually moving the chute. I bought the roll pins before watching the video, but was not sure how I was going to get them in there. I'll be buying that punch set.
I was told that the roll pin should be 3/16" not 5/32" as stated in your video but i did go out and buy both just in case. I haven't done replacement yet but will let you know if it works.
Thanks for saving me from buying a new joystick assembly. A set of roll pins from HF on sale for $4 did the trick instead of $120 for the assembly. Thanks again for taking the time to make the video.
My 4 way chute control quit working two days ago, googled for a solution and your excellent video came up. My 4 way chute now repaired and working perfectly. It made it easier having the exact same snowblower as you. Your video certainly sped up my repair time. Would have been quicker had I not put the handle backwards on my first go round, had to punch the pin out and re-insert with the handle the correct way round. Thanks for posting your repair.
I just finished repairing my chute assembly on my craftmans snowblower, replacing the broken split pin, works great. Thanks for the helpful video
Thanks for the video. I tore it all down and like you needed an extra set of hands to hold the parts to try to insert the roll pin. No one around so I replaced the roll pin with a Cotter Pin that fit tight and there was still plenty of room for it to rotate and not catch on the bent ends. Should get me through this winter and if I want to change it - I'll do it in the warmer months.
Great Video. It helped a lot. I had to replace one of my U-Joint yoke roll-pins (yoke to block pin) in the joystick assembly. The process is just as you described but the pin size is 3/16”. Thx again.
Thanks for the video-appears to apply to Cub cadet as well. I'm gonna go buy the roll pin in the morning !
Thanks for the video, it definitely helped. I just replaced mine last night. I did it without removing the whole joystick part. Since it was the bottom roll pin, I was able to get the punch in there to get the old one out and used vice grips to compress the one end of the roll pin to get it started and then used a bigger punch and a hammer to knock it in.
Just watched this video. It the exact help I needed. Thank you! We replaced the pin and it's like new.
Great video.. I'm having the same issue right now. I had a hunch there was piece missing and after viewing your video i could confirm that hunch. Thank you!!
